At the end of June, Berlin again became the auto industry’s capital for Connected Car and Automated Driving. This year’s edition of ConCarExpo brought together more than 1000 visitors and over 80 exhibitors focused on the core issues of digitizing, shaping, and sustaining the automotive sector in the future. Bamboo Apps’ team members had made the most of the time in Berlin meeting exhibitors, industry thought leaders, soaking up the latest tech trends, and exchanging knowledge within the automotive community. In this post, we would like to highlight a few innovations and trends which in our opinion mark the beginning of a new era: Era of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communication.
ConCarExpo2018 had 4 exhibition areas: Automated Driving, IT Security for Vehicles, Digital Infrastructure and Automotive Mobility, Automotive HMI and Connectivity. Dozens of companies with the domain expertise in those fields unveiled their latest solutions and showcased the related projects they put massive engineering effort into.
Autonomous cars represent a major innovation for the automotive industry – their potential impact on mobility, economy, and society as a whole will be far-reaching. On the road towards autonomous driving V2X solution providers help to meet many technical, infrastructural and legal challenges.
At ConCarExpo, SYSGO company presented its PikeOS Hypervisor, an electronics and software platform for electric cars. The PikeOS Hypervisor serves as the backbone of the software architecture. PikeOS enables a predefined set of functions according to the plug-and-play principle. The new platform provides plenty of scope for individual product bundling. Its strict partitioning allows individual and secure integration of various software functions in the electric car, ranging from infotainment to safety-critical assistance systems. Siemens is preparing an electronics platform using the PikeOS Hypervisor that can be quickly extended and is prepared for autonomous driving and integration into an intelligent transport infrastructure.
Atlatec demonstrated a portable 3D mapping and localization solution that takes into account all objects that need to be surveyed on the roadmap, such as lane markings, road edges, signage, guard rails, vertical pole and guide posts. The data acquisition is handled with the Atlatec sensor box which contains cameras and a differential global navigation satellite system. High fidelity 3D maps are used for creating massive amounts of precise and detailed reference data for ADAS testing, moreover, the map data can be used for self-driving cars, as virtual environments in simulations and as ground truth for testing and validation.
The core requirements that go along with the realization of the digital world are determined by an appropriate information and communication structure. The automation of vehicles and enhanced road traffic safety can only be optimized with comprehensive, reliable and rapid information processes between a vehicle and vehicle infrastructure.
INVERS, a global leader in car handling solutions showcased its Shared Mobility OS that supports public and private shared mobility. The service includes a variety of operating models, starting from scooter sharing, free-floating carsharing, corporate sharing up to automated rental, ride pooling, and station-based carsharing. The platform is a suite of tools purely based on blockchain technology, comprising of end-user apps, backend software, vehicle management, payment integration, and telematics for operators to run a shared mobility service.
Parkbob offered a smart parking service enabling a digital on-street parking experience and delivering context-aware parking rules and restrictions in cities. Real-time on-street information and data science-based parking information, such as current search time, last mile routing, parking options, predicted availability help drivers to take better decisions and facilitates the search for available parking spots nearby. Parkbob addresses a consumer audience to improve the data quality of inventory, refine prediction and acquire real-time parking information.
Next-generation connected cars are unthinkable without maximum security. Automotive cyber security service providers find new ways to secure the driver in his personalized car and make sure that he won’t be exposed to the greatest risks which could mean being hacked.
At ConCarExpo, Arilou presented three cyber security solutions dedicated to the automotive environment.
Parallel Intrusion Prevention System (PIPS) protects the entire vehicle network from a single point by actively intercepting malicious communication originating from hijacked ECUs. Using a vehicle-unique, biometric-like identity, PIPS identifies and intercepts, in real-time, any malicious communication transmitted over the network.
In-Vehicle Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS) is an advanced software solution monitoring the control area network (CAN) bus and detecting anomalies in the communication patterns of electronic control units (ECUs).
Ethernet Security HUB (ESH) is a trusted platform for centralized integration of different security components. The ESH supports both standard and proprietary components, including authentication, message integrity, IDPS, client-owned components, and gap-bridging between integrated components.
Performance and design are no longer the only decisive criteria for purchasing a car. Customers are increasingly demanding ever more powerful Human-Machine Interfaces, particularly infotainment systems, with access to a wide spectrum of digital information.
MTA hosted a show car fitted with the ‘intelligent’ central unit and several displays of the latest version of its Human-to-Machine Interface system. This system manages the infotainment cluster and a passenger display, and HUD functions. The “electronic heart” of the MTA system is developed based on a flexible and powerful architecture that handles up to 3 displays inside the vehicle, as well as collects and conveys the information coming from the vehicle. The show car is also linked directly to a smartphone; for this feature, MTA integrates MirrorLink functions. In this way, the smartphone user interface can be seen in the central display, with graphics adapted to the typical use and safety requirements for vehicles.
As in the previous editions, ConCarExpo was rich in other technological innovations and developments that were introduced through direct interactive demonstration programs for the networked vehicle of the future and various areas of mobility.
The UK’s first fully autonomous vehicle, the Westfield POD, was presented within the UK pavilion, this year’s ConCar Expo partnering country. The Westfield POD (Pods on Demand) is the new incarnation of the Ultra vehicle for first-mile – last-mile transportation, built from off-the-shelf automotive industry components and use advanced technology to provide a unique transport solution. The POD utilizes the base technology platform from the work completed by ULTra PRT (Personal Rapid Transit). The original system has now completed over 5 million kilometers in a live commercial environment serving Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 POD Parking.
The Berlin-based startup German Autolabs showcased Chris - a digital assistant for drivers which employs the latest gesture control technology alongside with Artificial Intelligence (AI). This conversational assistant can be simply attached to the windshield or dashboard and connected with a smartphone via Bluetooth to conveniently operate a wide variety of apps. The AI-powered device enables drivers to send and reply to emails, listen to streamed music, and make and receive phone calls using intelligent speech and gesture recognition technology. Thanks to its advanced microphone array, as the “Alexa for Automotive”, Chris actively talks to the driver if there are new messages or traffic and navigation updates.
ConCarExpo 2018 showed that the automotive industry is undergoing a comprehensive revolution where the self-driving-system is the heart and the mobility platform is its brain. In the nearest future, the key priorities for automotive software development companies including Bamboo Apps will be higher cyber security, more extensive usage of AI, development of more powerful HMIs and IVI systems, and as a result of that - the continuous improvement of the driver’s experience.
